Somerden

Project details

Somerden is a highly interesting residential project to construct a replacement detached dwelling in a locally important location on the edge of Speldurst Village Boundary and adjacent to a Conservation Area and Metropolitan Green Belt. We have worked closely with the client, local authority and residents to create a highly impressive property which has been carefully designed around its beautiful natural context to maximise the use of light, space and views.

Following a robust consultation period the design of the 5-bed house, annex and garage was molded by the Client, Planning, Conservation and Landscaping Officers to successfully create an impressive bespoke contemporary design. The main house has been sunk into the natural topography of the site to reduce the visual impact of the scheme on its surrounding context whereas the choice of materials and detailing respect the more modern approach to design with local facing brickwork, large expanses of powder coated aluminium windows/doors, vertical/horizontal chestnut timber cladding and gentle curved standing seam metal roofs.

It was felt by the local authority that only a scheme which incorporates excellence in design and a very high architectural merit would be supported, which provides an indication of the quality of this project.
